For my first blog post, I want to tell you a little bit more about myself, as a person and a teacher. This deep map pictured here was an assignment for my ENG 405 class that uses symbols and places to introduce ourselves.
As you can see, I mapped out a kitchen counter at my home. Why my home when I could pick anywhere? While I may daydream about travelling, my heart always goes back to home. This sentiment is shown in the framed cross stitching above the counter. I also chose to include a cross stitching because I love doing crafts. I have yet to master cross stitching, but I’m currently learning to sew and can knit the best looking straight rectangles you’ve ever seen. This goal of constant growth and self-improvement is also represented in the plant on the top right corner. Believing that people never stop growing and changing is central to my personal and educational principles.
The collection of the cell phone, mp3 player, and eReader also shed light on my educational philosophies. I love technology and think that it can play an important role in the classroom. I don’t know if you can tell in this picture, but the phone is receiving an incoming call as reminder that someone can always ask for help. The mp3 player is there not only because I love music, but also it is a reminder that while I learn through auditory stimulus, my students may not. Displayed on the eReader is the opening line of Pride and Prejudice, because while I like technology, I still think that there are lessons to be learned from books written hundreds of years ago.
When I was first asked to draw a picture of myself using symbols, my mind went immediately to a coffee maker, but this is not surprising since coffee is nearly always on my mind. The coffee canister (bottom right) holds all the things that motivate me such as my future students, drive to succeed, and commitment to service. The blue cream carton (bottom middle) holds all the things that make my goals easier to achieve such as my family, friends, and teachers. The sugar bowl holds all the things that make my journey sweeter like hobbies, books, movies, and memories. All of these combine to make up the central pot of coffee that is my life.
